Bunjo's Comedy Lounge in Dublin, California announced this week that they are suspending their Friday night Open Mike show in favor of a new "Funny Fridays Showcase."

In an e-mail to registered open mike participants, Bunjo's announced that are "temporarily suspending" their open mike shows. Anyone who has attended open mikes anywhere knows that they can vary in quality due to their very nature, including performers of varied experience, inconsistent numbers of performers and untested material.

Until now, Bunjo's had been offering their open mike night with a rich mix of newbies and well-known talent every Friday evening. I recently spent an enjoyable Bunjo's evening watching proven talents and first-timers, including an older gentleman with a profound stutter who steadfastly worked through some charming material and real heart.

However, Friday nights will continue to be a lively offering for comedy-goers at Bunjo's, with the "Funny Fridays" showcase offering established performers doing time-tested material and more-reliable value for their entertainment investment.

Bunjo's is to be commended for considering not only the needs of paying customers, but that of performers. While this isn't a positive occurrence for less-established comics, the tone of their announcement reflects respect and a desire to serve both masters (customers and performers) with the most grace and efficacy possible. The announcement (signed by "John," presumably John DeKoven, the "Chief Executive Comic at Bunjo's"), offers hope for a renewed Open Mike Night that benefits its customers, and encouraging newer comics to continue to improve. There's more care expressed than was absolutely necessary, and the fact that the notice was sent to performers well in advance of the change proves Bunjo's to be an earnest player in the comedy continuum. Kudos to them!
