Comedy Night at La Contenta Wows the Crowd!

It was a crisp, clear Saturday night in Valley Springs, and the stage was set for what would be the area's first live comedy show in recent memory.  The doors at La Contenta  opened at 7pm, and the sold-out crowd didn't wait long to fill the Event Center.  The crowd itself was what those in the business might describe as "warm;" loose, and ready to laugh.  The stage was set.  This had the potential to be a very good night.

The emcee, Joe Rivera, introduced the first comedian, Tom Bickle.  Tom did material on based on his own experiences, including the oddness of his last name and how much grief he got for it in his youth; what it was like growing up in the Central Valley; and being a young stoner whose father was a veteran of the police department.  The crowd responded very well to Tom Bickle's set, setting a strong tone for early in the show.

Joe Rivera performed his own, very approachable brand of comedy, including topics on local events and Mexican culture, as well as material thick with wordplay and his take on current events.  Joe showed his skill as an emcee, keeping the show on track and the crowd entertained.

Roberto Arreola was next on stage, and this guy rocked it!  Roberto dove in with his take on Mexican women, child-rearing and why women like men who roll their R's, and the crowd was with him the whole way.  Roberto was so popular that the audience practically demanded he extend his set, which he did! If he'd done a stagedive, it couldn't have gone better.  When he finally brought the lovefest to a conclusion for the good of the show, he was commended several times for his fantastic work, and I even saw him signing autographs.
